NCS FAQs

Got a question about YC Hertfordshire NCS? Have a look below:

What do I need to bring on the programme?

Details of what you need to bring, your kit list, will be sent to you with your sign-up confirmation letter and is included in the Welcome Pack which you will receive when you attend a preparation event. We provide any specialist equipment/clothing so you do not have to buy any of this. Please note that we are unable to insure personal belongings.

How old do I have to be to participate in NCS?

Summer programmes

Summmer NCS programmes are for young people in School Years 11 and 12 (or equivalent). Participants must be 16 or 17 on or before 31st August that year. This means 15 year olds can attend summer programmes if they turn 16 on or before 31st August that year. Participants must also be under 18 during all the residential parts of the programme.

October half term programmes

Autumn NCS programmes are for young people in School Year 12 (or equivalent). Participants must have turned 16 or 17 on 31st August of the current calendar year and must be under 18 during the residential part of the programme.

Exceptional circumstances

In some exceptional circumstances, such as a special educational need or a disability, there may be certain young people who are aged 18 or over who may be eligible to take part in NCS.

Also in such circumstances, if they are in School Year 11 (or equivalent) they may be able to take part in the Autumn programme even if they did not turn 16 until after the 31 August that year.

If this may apply to you, please contact us as soon as possible on 01992 555682 to see if you are eligible for the programme.

Can I share a room with my friend?

NCS is a great way to meet new people and make new friends. You can let us know if you would like to share a room with a friend by emailing us ncs@hertfordshire.gov.uk. We will try our best to accommodate these requests. Please note however that NCS with YC Hertfordshire is single gender and as such we cannot accommodate room sharing requests for mixed genders.

Please remember that the majority of young people's time on NCS with YC Hertfordshire will be spent on exciting daytime activities, so please don't let the accommodation arrangements deter you from taking up this unique opportunity!

Are mobile phones allowed to be brought on the programme?

Yes and you will be able to use them when activities are not taking place (mobile phone usage during activity time is not allowed). However, please note that there may not always be mobile phone reception, especially during your first residential, which is usually based in the countryside. Please note that we are not able to insure personal belongings so young people who bring their mobile phones do so at their own risk.

Regardless of the type of accommodation on their particular programme, participants will have access to power sockets and so should be able to charge their phones. All our accommodation comes with the necessary amenities, such as access to power sockets, showers, etc.

How will I travel?

Transportation to and from residential venues is provided as part of the cost of NCS with YC Hertfordshire. You will usually travel by coach and will be accompanied by staff during all journeys. You will be responsible for your own travel arrangements during the social action element of the programme, please speak to your team leader if you will experience difficulty with this.

What if I need to miss a day?

To get the most out of your NCS experience with YC Hertfordshire and to graduate, you need to take part in the whole programme. If you have to miss a day for a special reason you’ll need to discuss this with your team leader or contact us on 01992 555682 or email ncs@hertfordshire.gov.uk as soon as possible.

Can I apply again if I've done it before and I’m an NCS graduate?

NCS is a once-in-a-lifetime experience so you can only do it once. But you can get involved as an NCS graduate, tell your friends about it and help us spread the word. You will be contacted by the NCS Graduate network with any new opportunities that are available.
