Youth Connexions helps Hertfordshire’s primary school students to think about the world of work

16 September 2015

Primary school children are being encouraged to think about their futures through space themed careers lessons called ‘Rocket into the Future’.

St Bernadette primary school in London Colney was one of a number of primary schools across Hertfordshire that have run Rocket into the Future sessions

Delivered by Hertfordshire County Council Youth Connexions, the series of fun and interactive lessons explores different types of work, and engages the students in thinking about their individual skills and aspirations. A local employer helps bring to life the discussion about workplace settings and team work. Other sessions explore topics such as the types of job and industries in the local area, how to research careers on the internet, and making a successful transition to secondary school.

The programme has shown that it is never too early for young people to start preparing for their future working life. By thinking about the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences ahead, students will be ready for lift off later on.

Feedback has been extremely positive

A year 6 student who took part in the programme commented “I have learnt more about the options available in careers and how I can help myself with the move to secondary school”.  Another year 6 student said “I learnt that there are so many more jobs to explore in the world than I thought”.

A teacher whose class took part said of Rocket into the Future: “Many of our students do not have aims for future jobs or further education. It has given the children ideas of possible careers and ambition. It was great for our children to go home and talk to their parents about jobs and careers.”
