‘Your Time Your Space’ – New South Oxhey Project a Success with Young People
29 October 2015
The beginning of October saw the launch of a new project at YouthZone – the newly revamped South Oxhey Youth Centre. Aimed at young people in care, young parents, carers and friends, the project is already proving to be a success.
The newly refurbished South Oxhey Youth Centre is the base for the project
Focusing on a number of different issues, with a particular reference to how these impact on young people in care, one of the primary aims of this project is to boost the self-confidence of the young attendees. Supported by youth workers, the young people are given positive encouragement in their personal development and enabled to progress their independent living skills. Areas covered include how to maintain a healthy lifestyle including healthy cooking, money management and independent living skills.
Feedback so far has been very positive from those attending – with the young people really appreciating a dedicated project aimed at their needs, and particular appreciation of the real understanding of the staff involved. “I’m really happy to be able to join a project that’s aimed just at us”, commented one young person. At their suggestion, every individual is building their own ‘scrap-book’ which they can fill with useful information, recipes and suggestions – as a permanent memento of their time.
So far, learning to cook chewy sultana cookies has proved to be a particular success, with one of the young people commenting, “I never knew healthy cakes could taste so nice.”
Getting busy with the cookie ingredients.......... and the finished article - yum!
