Young people joining forces to have their say

19 July 2017

Youth councils in St Albans and Harpenden are merging to create one youth council to represent young people across the whole St Albans district.

The new district youth council will meet every week and on the last Monday of each month meetings will be at Harpenden Youth Project (above the library) with the other three meetings at St Albans District Council offices. All young people aged between 11 and 19 are encouraged to get involved to have a say on the issues affecting them.

St Albans Youth Council was set up two years ago and has lobbied the local council on young people’s issues, raised money for local charities and produced a report on mental health report which was raised in the House of Lords.

Meanwhile, Harpenden Youth Town Council was been representing young people in the town for more than 20 years.

The young people involved in the youth councils are still keen to have their voices heard and they feel that a diverse group from a wider area will give them more of a voice in local democracy.

The next meeting is due to take place on 11th September 2017 from 7.00 – 9.00 pm at St Albans District Council.
