Young people inspired to dream big, act now and never give up

27 September 2017

YC Hertfordshire held graduation ceremonies for almost 900 young people who completed the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme to celebrate their achievements and showcase their community projects to family and peers.

On 10th and 17th September the graduation ceremonies were held at the University of Hertfordshire’s De Havilland Campus in Hatfield.

The events were an opportunity for NCS graduates to showcase their successful social action projects to their parents, reunite with their team mates and receive their NCS certificates of achievement.

The events were kicked off by motivational speakers, Action Jackson who joined us on the 10th and Mikel Ameen, who joined us on the 17th, both providing a rousing and energetic start to the ceremonies. Jackson invited young people on the stage to join him in singing and signing actions to “Dream Big, Act Now, Never Give Up, You’re amazing”. Jackson added: “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. Recognise that you can do anything you put your mind to; never give up and if at first you don’t succeed, try again.”

As part of their YC Hertfordshire NCS experience every young person spent 60 hours volunteering on a social action project, which they designed and led themselves. Some of the organisations supported by the NCS volunteers were: Fit and Fed, which was recently launched to help alleviate holiday isolation, inactivity and hunger among children and young people; Age UK, and; Hertswise, where volunteers raised funds and provided companionship to the residents.

YC Hertfordshire runs NCS programmes during school holidays throughout the year and is currently recruiting for the 2017 October half term.

If you’re in school years 11 or 12 and are interested in taking part in NCS, please email ncs@hertfordshire.gov.uk or register your interest here.
