Young people hugely proud at Hertfordshire Learning Disability Games

31 July 2015

On Saturday 25th July, members of the Waltham Cross based Focus Youth Project took part in the 2015 Hertfordshire Learning Disability Games

The Focus Youth Project is a youth project run by Youth Connexions for young people with additional needs, and offer very varied activities including sports, cooking, arts and crafts, music-making, trips away and socialising.

A team of 10 young people from Waltham Cross Focus entered the games, alongside 7 other teams from across the county. The day took place at Sports Space Athletic Track, Jarman Park, Hemel Hempstead and consisted of circuit style games in the morning and track events including sprint, hurdle and relay races in the afternoon. The team was in very high spirits and lots of cheering and support could be heard around the track.

The young people approached the day with lots of determination and courage as for some, track events had never been attempted before. Both staff and young people had a brilliant day, which finished with 4 individual medals and 2 team medals being won. The Focus team achieved gold medals for the 50m relay and 100m hurdles; silver for the 100m relay and bronze for the 100m sprint and 100m hurdles races. Well done to all!

A parent of a young person who participated said afterwards “I just wanted to let you know how much Caelan enjoyed Saturday! He was reluctant to go initially as he said 'I'm no good at games or sport' but I told him this wasn't the same and it was just fun. He came home absolutely brimming with confidence in his ability, especially the running, which normally fills him with dread as he's never been able to keep up with others. Since then I don't think anyone has avoided seeing his medal or certificate!”

The event was hugely successful and the Focus project team are planning to enter a group at next year’s event and encourage other LD groups to be involved.
