Young People from South Oxhey Climb to New Heights!
22 March 2016
Eighteen young people from South Oxhey have been enjoying the challenge of learning to climb, thanks to Youth Connexions and a grant from ‘Sportivate’.
Is that really a person up there?!! Nearly at the top.....
The young people all attend a youth project at YouthZone, and have been delighted to have the opportunity to test their climbing skills at the XC-Centre in Hemel Hempstead. The ‘NICAS’ Level 1 course is taking place over 8 weeks, and is taught by qualified instructors, with Youth Connexions youth workers on hand. After full safety demonstrations, the young people have been taught to put on a harness and helmet, tie a rethreaded figure of 8 knot and stopper and belay correctly. By the end of the course they will have to demonstrate that they are competent in all elements as well as complete 10 climbs and belays to achieve their accreditation.
One young person commented, "It's been really fun going to a different site and having a chance to learn something new. I can't wait for the next opportunity I get offered", while another added, "I've learned so much so quickly. I prefer learning hands on rather than in a class room". The young people have enjoyed the opportunity to put themselves to the test, as Henry said: "Learning the knot tying was such a challenge but once I had conquered it I helped other people learn too", and Reece added, ‘’I'm scared of heights but my youth worker has supported me to keep pushing myself and I'm glad I signed up!"
The course is due to finish at the end of March – with all the young people well on their way to achieving their certificates.
