Young Film-makers from Chorleywood get inspiration at Elstree Studios
19 November 2015
A team of young people from the Three Rivers District were inspired by a tour of Elstree Studios last Friday, which they had won as a prize earlier in the year with their film, ‘Confidence’.

Supported by Youth Connexions, the young people made the film for the ‘Sense of Change’ competition run by Elstree Film Design. They won the award for ‘Best Sound’ and came runner-up for ‘Best Film’. As well as the prestige of receiving the award at a ceremony at the BFI in London, the prize entailed a tour of Elstree Studios – including a look at the famous George Lucas Stage, where the original Star Wars films were made.
The young people were introduced to a visual effects artist – and had a tour around ‘lifecast’ – a workshop making props for the films – where they were able to feel and hold some of the props used in the films themselves. “I couldn’t believe how realistic the props are”, commented one young person, while another added, “This is amazing – what an opportunity. I have always wanted to see inside a real film studio. I can’t believe how life-like the props are!” The tour was completed with an opportunity to find out about future apprenticeships and careers in the industry – as well as a chance to have a photo taken in the ‘Big Brother’ chair!
The film, ‘Confidence’ was made as part of an ongoing youth project based at Rootz Café in Chorleywood and run by the Three Rivers Youth Connexions team – designed to encourage young people interested in film-making and the arts. The film has been presented at Film Festivals at Bedford, Swale, Thurrock and St Albans from April to October this year and to date has been viewed 467 times and downloaded 1,393 times from 34 different countries across the world on the Vimeo website alone.
