There is a variety of sessions on offer, and the school selected ‘Total Eclipse’, which looks at the transition from Year 6 in primary education to Year 7 at secondary school. The students who took part are due to start in September at the local schools of Simon Balle School, The Sele School, Richard Hale School and Presdales School where they will benefit from having the continuity of an independent and impartial Youth Connexions Personal Adviser.

The students undertook a range of practical activities including putting together a picture of someone about to progress on to Year 7.

Year 6 Teacher Alison Chadwick commented “The children really enjoyed this engaging workshop, which covered the basics to help them transition smoothly into secondary education.  They are now feeling prepared and confident and are aware of some useful strategies to help them find their feet in September.”

Personal Adviser Katie Bullock commented “The students participated fully in the session and learned more about their big move in a few months. Several said that it is really comforting for them to know that they can come and talk to the Youth Connexions advisers in their chosen secondary schools.”

Emma Gratwick who co-delivered the Total Eclipse session said “The students made some lovely contributions during the discussion sections and their artworks were wonderfully creative. They are now better prepared for the transition to secondary school.”

Comments from students:

“At first I felt tense and nervous, but now I am positive and relaxed. I enjoyed all the session”.

“I have learnt that I can be confident and speak to someone if I am worried”.

“I enjoyed the fact that they understood what we were going through”

“I wouldn’t change anything about today’s session because I thought it was very helpful and personally I thought it was perfect”.
