Plus One – Take One!
29 July 2015
A new film has just been launched starring the young parents who took part recently in the Youth Connexions Plus One project
Plus One is a free course for 16-18 year old parents or parents to be (or up to 25 for those with a learning difficulty or disability). It helps young parents to manage the challenge of being a parent and develop their skills and qualities for the future. It also includes the opportunity to do something great in their local community.

The course runs one day a week for 34 weeks, and provides the opportunity to develop parenting skills including making money go further, nutrition and first aid. Participants improve their English and Maths ability, receive support to plan their future, and attend a work experience placement.

Here’s what some of the young people said about the course:
“It’s opening doorways. (I’ve) met new people, in the same shoes. (We talk about) work experience, what we want to do in the future, how we’re going to respond to things like needing child care”
“This has been on my mind a lot. I’ve gone through a lot in life. I’ve made a good new friend here, and having the tutors to talk to has meant so much to me. This course has boosted my confidence no end. It makes my week. This is somewhere we can learn new things…”.
“Before, (at school) if I didn’t understand I moved off. Here they help you, and I learn.”
The course locations are Hemel Hempstead, Hertford, Stevenage and Potters Bar.
