800 young people celebrate their Youth Connexions National Citizen Service graduation

Youth Connexions held four graduation ceremonies for 800 young people to celebrate their National Citizen Service (NCS) graduation at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield on 11 and 18 September.

The events were opportunities for the NCS graduates to showcase their successful social action projects to their parents, reunite with their team mates and youth workers, and receive their NCS certificates of achievement.

The events were opened by motivational speaker, Bola Adeoshun (Mr Beezy), who called on young people to explore their five keys to success: “dream big, act now, have confidence, enjoy life and never give up!” He explained that success is a journey and by following these five keys they will succeed. Bola fully supports NCS and said “I totally believe in NCS, the films showing the young people’s journeys are amazing. It’s a great event”.

As part of their Youth Connexions NCS experience every young person spent 60 hours volunteering on a social action project, which they designed and led themselves. For example, the Dacorum team supported local charity Hector’s House in Berkhamsted, which offers support for young people experiencing mental health issues, by producing an awareness DVD for use in schools. They also did a family “Smile day” in the town centre, which included a flash mob dance and was attended by local MP Mike Penning.
