Helping parents in North Herts explore new career opportunities

04 May 2017

A pilot project designed between Family Services Commissioning team and YC Hertfordshire to help parents get back into work is already proving a success in North Herts.

The project, which offers one-to-one advice and support from a YC Hertfordshire adviser, is being trialled through Holly Blue Children’s Centre in Baldock and Lime Tree Children’s Centre in Letchworth.

One parent of four children has successfully gained permanent, part-time work in a local children’s nursery and play centre, while another parent from Letchworth has secured a work placement to help her gain experience and develop her customer service skills. A successful work experience placement has resulted in a parent from Baldock securing part time employment.

Sessions are also planned for another ten parents who would like information, advice and guidance around returning to work.

Support will be given to help them draft or update their CVs, find out more about the local job market and look at what additional training or qualifications they would need to work towards.

In addition to the one-to-one help given YC Hertfordshire, which is part of Hertfordshire County Council, is also working with the children’s centres to provide free courses to help boost the employability of parents looking to return to work. These include confidence building sessions and ICT refresher courses.

The pilot initiative is taking place in children’s centres in four areas of Hertfordshire: Baldock (Holly Blue and Lime Tree), Harpenden (Batford Early Years Centre), Hoddesdon (The Ark and Three Parks) and Watford (Leavesden, Beechfield and Berrygrove). The initiative helps parents who want to get back into work by offering support such as guidance interviews, work experience and various workshops to help prepare them for finding work.

Each person accessing the support meets with an adviser, who assesses their current situation, childcare needs and skills, qualifications and aims.
