Youth Connexions recently organised a visit to Optical Metrology Services, a measurement and inspection technology company based in Stansted Mountfitchet.
Optical Metrology Services (OMS) is a small company whose main specialism is using lasers to measure pipes with extreme accuracy. Their primary customers are in the oil and gas sector where OMS enables them to fit-up and weld pipes more efficiently and safely; they also work with customers in defence, utilities, the civil nuclear industry, pharmaceuticals and academic institutions. The company has twice been awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise: Innovation.

The purpose of the visit was to enable careers practitioners and teachers to gain a valuable insight into a Hertfordshire engineering company. Sarah Gladstone, HR Manager spoke about the challenges of recruiting specialists, especially engineers and software developers, and described some of the tasks that applicants have to undertake at a selection day. A colleague then talked about his route into project management and what his diverse and expanding role entails.
Sarah commented "It's so important for careers staff to know about organisations like ours so that they are up to date with what's out there. By coming to look and learn they can understand better the needs of the industry and let young people know about the skills we need."
Mark Hughes, Team Manager at Youth Connexions commented "It's fascinating to get an insight into how a company such as OMS operates. There are some wonderful opportunities for young people in this industry using cutting edge technology, the opportunity to travel and receive comprehensive training."
