Employers and YC Hertfordshire Shape Hertfordshire’s Future Workforce at Simon Balle School
25 July 2017
Over 40 employers gathered at Simon Balle School, Hertford to help put Year 10 and 12 students on the right career path.
The careers fair, organised by Hertfordshire County Council YC Hertfordshire, was part of the Careers Education and Guidance Service delivered throughout the year in a large number of local schools by YC Hertfordshire, all involving the participation of local businesses and organisations.
Employers set out their stalls and students were encouraged to ask questions about their companies, entry qualifications and routes into employment.
A full range of job sectors were represented from solicitors, accountants, landscape architecture, uniformed services, local authorities , the ambulance service, engineering, construction, media, art and music, hair and beauty, sport, science and banking. Students were invited to consider how they might progress to work in these sectors through the variety of choices open to them at 16 from attending a school 6th form or an FE College, starting an apprenticeship or planning to go onto university.
David Hoskins, Employment and Skill Co-ordinator from YC Hertfordshire, said: “It was wonderful to see so many employers supporting this event and letting young people know first-hand about their companies and the opportunities open to them in the future. It’s important that students are aware of local companies offering an alternative to the more traditional graduate routes into employment. We would like to thank everyone who attended for their support and for sharing their expertise with Hertfordshire’s workers of tomorrow.”
Michael Clapham, Field Engineer at Bechtel Corporation, said: “It was a great event - possibly the best one I have attended yet! I thoroughly enjoyed it and I look forward to attending future events”.
Daire Brennan, Teacher at Simon Balle All-Through School, said: “It was a thoroughly enjoyable, informative afternoon and the range of employers who gave up their time for our students was great and covered many sectors of local and national businesses.”
