St Albans Young People receive awards

20/05/2010

On 17th May the young organisers of St Albans Mela 2009 were awarded certificates by The Mayor of St Albans, Chris Oxley, for their extensive hours committed to organising a community event. St Albans Mela was an Asian multicultural festival held in Clarence Park on the 27th of September 2009 aiming to bring all members of the community together to celebrate Asian Culture.

The event was organised by young people who were supported by St Albans District council, Youth Connexions Hertfordshire, and other joint partners. The young group aged 14 to 19 spent over a year planning the event aimed at celebrating Asian culture and showing the true colours of the district's diversity. On the day a combination of award winning food, world renowned poets and chart topping headliners made Mela a great success attracting well over a thousand people. In addition to this the young people raised money for two local charities on the day. The Grove House and Kashmir Deaf Children Trust were presented with the donations. The Mela festival was a great success and the young people are now aiming their sights on the next event.
