Alternative Provision and Foundation Learning

Alternative Provision and Foundation Learning

Alternative Provision

Alternative provision has been defined by the DfE as 'education outside of school'.  It is run by non-school providers, qualified to deliver programmes of learning in different environments  to build the  confidence of young people and engage them in learning. It has been set up for learners aged 14-16 i.e. KS4, to complement the programmes in schools or the Education Support Centres.

Foundation Learning

Foundation Learning is the umbrella term for all programmes that are level 1 and below i.e. for those learners not able to gain 5 GCSEs A* - C including Maths and English. Foundation Learning has 3 components – vocational/ subject learning, personal and social development and functional skills.

Directory of Personalised Learning Opportunities i.e. KS4 Alternative Provision

The directory is hosted on this website. It is searchable and designed to set out all the available provision in one place. Alternative Providers entered on the directory have been quality assured by the 14-19 Strategy and Commissioning team. This covers insurance, health and safety safeguarding and CRB.

The directory contains details of accredited alternative programmes offered by work-based learning providers, independent providers and FE colleges, the majority of these are supporting Foundation Learning and programmes at level 1 and below.

We advise purchasers to only use the providers listed in this Directory.
